The drinks we imbibe can be just as beneficial or harmful to our health as the foods we eat. As time has gone by, it seems there are just so many choices for what one can drink. It's not simple anymore. Back in the day, the choice for a staple like water was very limited: tap water kind of ruled the roost. Now we have all types of waters to choose from: vitamin water, smart water, flavored water, ionized water, bottled water, filtered water, carbonated water... you name it.
Best Drinks for Men’s Health
The market for beverages has exploded, and most of these are nothing but a bottle full of sugar and food colorings. Even the carbonated products are popping up everywhere like nobody's business with innumerable products. The question of “to fizz, or not to fizz?” has taken over.
Is this all really necessary?
My mantra for life: keep it simple... and this applies especially to food and drink.
I know it can be hard to convince a man to change his ways in terms of what he eats or how he exercises. But when I get down to the nitty-gritty and show my male patients the results of their cholesterol, sugar, hormone, and micronutrient tests... all I can say is that these men get a little nervous all of a sudden, and that’s putting it nicely.
My advice: first off, ditch the soda, coffee, and dairy, while limiting intake of alcohol. Soda is nothing but bad news for the body, while coffee affects adrenal and heart. Dairy is animal protein which the human body is not meant to digest, in turn causing acidity and inflammation. Alcohol in moderate and controlled consumption can be beneficial, however, overdoing it reverses all the positive effects it can have on the heart and brain.
From a medical standpoint, there are certain health conditions I worry about for men. Just like women experience menopause, men experience what we call andropause. This is when testosterone decreases in conjunction with low libido and difficulty attaining an erection. Prostate cancer or enlarged prostate are unique to men of course, but what is interesting is that men suffer from a lot of the same conditions that women suffer from. But why do women outlive men by over 5 years? Women are more likely to seek medical attention. A lot of diseases that men succumb to early on are preventable, and these include heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, colon cancer, and metabolic syndrome.
So men, pay attention to your bodies: if something doesn't look or feel right, seek medical attention right away. Putting off minor problems can and will only lead to major problems down the road, and ultimately an early demise. Detox your body at least once a year with a plant protein cleanse, which is what I have all my patients do. Strive to create more alkalinity rather than acidity in your body. And always make time to exercise, have great sex, and get plenty of sleep: not only will these activities make you feel amazing, they’ll create synergy of the mind, body and spirit.
Whole Juice with Chia Seeds
I see many male patients with low libido and erectile dysfunction. Using natural and holistic ways to treat these issues are way better than reaching for a Viagra. Watermelon, pomegranate, beets, green veggies, berries, bananas... they all enhance circulation and blood flow to the sexual organs while enhancing nitric oxide production. Throw in some chia seeds, like what the Aztec warriors used to eat for stamina... and be prepared to go all night.
Water
This simple and abundant beverage is greatly underestimated in regards to how powerful it is in warding off mental and physical ailments. Water is needed for mental clarity and physical health, and it helps the brain regulate body temperature and mood. Water flushes out toxins and keeps skin looking supple. Opt for plain, unadulterated water: no need to add extra unsafe chemicals to your body, as if we aren't already exposed to a plethora of environmental toxins.
Pomegranate Juice
This superfruit has been shown to have numerous beneficial effects for men including blood pressure reduction, reversal of atherosclerosis, glucose stability, and prostate health. Plus, there is loads of vitamin C in this tangy beverage.
Tea
Men may feel ashamed or embarrassed to admit they are depressed, but it happens to the best of us. We are all only human, but reaching for a few cups of tea daily can not only boost your mood, it can prevent several disease processes, from the brain to the heart to cancer. Green tea has been lauded for its prostate health benefits. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), found in green tea, serves as an androgen antagonist, meaning it can inhibit cancer cell formation in the prostate.
Coconut Water
After a sweaty workout at the gym, don't reach for an artificially flavored and colored sports drink: that will do your body much more harm than good. Instead, reach for Mother Nature's sports drink, coconut water. While it is refreshing, it is also packed with all the vitamins and minerals and electrolytes the body needs to rehydrate. Other forms of coconut, like the milk and flesh, are just as beneficial: they are packed with essential fatty acids that are great for the brain and heart.
Beer
While you wouldn't necessarily equate a healthy diet with beer, men will be men, and most men like their beer. Surprisingly, there are some healthy beers out there: IPA (India Pale Ale) is about 50 times stronger than the average beer, so that means it contains more phenols, which are antioxidants. Sierra Nevada is a good brand. Other types of beer that are considered good for you in moderate quantities are Guinness, Abita Purple Haze, O'Fallon Hemp Hop Rye, and most light beers, just because they are low on calories. To maintain heart-healthy effects and a slim waistline, make sure to limit your consumption of alcohol. Beer can have a positive impact in raising HDL, which is the cardioprotective cholesterol, but that doesn’t mean you should down buckets of it.
Aloe
Whether you need help with acne, are looking for an immune booster, desire a liver detox, or want a cardiovascular benefit, aloe juice is the answer. It has been therapeutically used for over 5,000 years, and with its insanely high amounts of vitamins, minerals, adaptogens, and amino acids, aloe juice is a cure for almost any ailment, external or internal. Most men enjoying eating meat, and animal protein causes acidity in the body. If you want to have your steak and eat it too, then wash it down with some aloe juice to help alkalinize the body.

Tomato Juice
Think Bloody Mary without vodka: you can add spices to perk this drink up, and the high levels of lycopene in tomatoes have been shown to lower risks of prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancers along with benefits for heart and bone health. Tomatoes are also packed with a lot of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that improve overall wellness.
Protein Smoothie
Before you head off to the gym to pump some iron, make sure you don't leave home without a high-quality protein shake. Ditch the dairy and opt for almond milk instead, and ask your integrative doctor about reputable protein powders and see what best works for you: some people work better with plant protein, some with whey protein. Add some berries or bananas for extra flavor and nutrition, then drink away. Not only will you help build muscle, but you will have lasting strength and energy for the rest of the day. They also work as great meal replacements if you are trying to slim down.
