Dating can be hard to do. Though there are many places out there at our disposal, it’s hard to actually see them when they’re directly in front of us. We’re too busy thinking of personally responsibilities that we often forget the basics of what a date should be: connected, fun and privacy.
You’re not the only one who’s having trouble figuring out creative dates. Most gay couples often limit themselves, thinking they ought to stick inside the gayborhoods or gay-friendly events. Nothing is further from the truth. It’s time to spread our wings and take a bite of what the world has to offer! Here are a few ideas I know you’ll eat up:
1. Cook Dinner Together in your underwear.
Make sure it’s a mutual affair. Go to the store, decide on the ingredients together and be next to each other behind the stove, flipping and stirring as necessary. Fondue and pizza are my favorite things to make with a man. They’re both fun, easy to make, and require little clean up. To add a little spice, get naked and put an apron on – there’ll be no need to make dessert.
2. Build forts out of furniture and blankets and pretend like you’re camping and/or pretend like you’re at war with paper plans and pillow bombs. Sure it might seem childish, but you’ll be doing it together. Bring the laptop inside the fort and watch your favorite show. This will be the icing on the cake. Have you ever hooked up inside a fort made of cushions? It’s hysterically fun. Try it out.
3. Take random selfies with each other around the city doing crazy things, i.e. climbing trees, pretending to sleep on a bench, making sand angels, jumping in place on a cross walk. No matter where you go or what you do, it should always be spontaneous. Trust me, by the end of the day your stomach will be hurting from all the ridiculous laughter that’s inevitable to ensue.
4. Go for a drive and find a restaurant in a city you’ve never visited before. A random drive and dine is always going to lead to adventure and bonding. It’s fun, unplanned and exercises your ability to try new things. Who knows. Maybe the more adventures you have the more adventurous you’ll become in other aspects of the relationship, i.e. the bedroom.
5. Star gazing is a romantic idea.
Take a walk in the park just before sunset and whip out the blanket. Once the stars are out, lie down on your backs and count the stars. Bring a bottle of wine while you’re at it.
6. Double date game night is always a good idea.
Invite Couples over to play Pictionary, Heads Up, Charades, or any other of your favorite games. Make sure the teams are in their appropriate couples at first. That way if you win, it will only validate the connection you have which might bloom into sexual tension later on. After that, switch the teams and tease each other a little.
7. Paint your own pottery studies are awesome.
It gives you and him a chance to paint a sculpture of your choice while giving you opportunities to express your creative sides to each other. The environment is always relaxed and welcomes interesting conversations, plus you can also have a little fun by “accidentally” starting a face-paint war (but only if it won’t get him angry). The aftermath are always epic selfies you’ll never delete. Color Me Mine is a great studio that has multiple locations.
8. Movie trilogy marathons are great because you’re both at home alone with no pressure to dress nice (except for each other of course). Plus it leads to insane snuggle opportunities. Eating Out, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Spiderman and Shrek are all good choices. Don’t forget, you can also watch TV show marathons.
*To add a little comedy in the mix, set the TV on mute and improvise dialogue between the characters. By the time you start your second glass of wine, you might not finish the marathon due to excessive laughter.
9. Dress really fancy and go somewhere not-so-fancy.
This one might take some convincing, but it’s guaranteed to fun and a great story. Since you’re both in your own world, doing something like this will bring you closer together. It’s an adventure that’s totally personalized. Slip on a tuxedo and go bowling, tell people you just came from an awards ceremony (or not). Dress to the nines and go out to Red Lobster. Wear a suit & tie and go to the movies. There’s tremendous power in playing dress-up. Use it.
10 Do all the lame tourist attractions your city has to offer.
Living in LA, I cringe when I think about doing some of these things, but trust me. It’s always going to be good for a laugh, especially when they rave and brag about places you see everyday which are totally not a big deal. Make it fun. Pretend you’re from out of town and talk with accents… it’ll be worth it.
12. Drive-in movie theaters.
13. Museums will always spark conversations about life and philosophy.

11. Go hiking or rock climbing whenever the weather is nice.
There are tons of rock gyms and twice as many hidden hiking trails in and around your city. Hiking together is always going to be fun because it welcomes conversation and invites more endorphins into your brain. Take advantage of it.
12. Drive-in movie theaters.
That’s right, they still exist! Not only that, but they’ve been a well-kept secret for many years since tickets are incredibly cheap. Not to mention their concessions are almost half the price as regular movie theaters. Drive-ins are fun, romantic and, above all, private. Snuggle, cuddle and do your thang in the confines of your own car.
13. Museums will always spark conversations about life and philosophy.
That, or you can share an incredible lack of interest in anything you see which will create a mad set of the giggles. Depending on the museum it usually can take all day so be sure you’re prepared beforehand. It’ll always be worth it in the end. Check out special exhibits or Imax-3D science films they might be showing for a limited run.
15. Thrift store shopping sprees are never boring.
14. At-home spa nights are sensual and always lead to more things.
Who needs an expensive day at a luxurious spa when you can have one with your man in your own bedroom? Invest in nice body oils, candles, music and face masks. Nothing says romance like donning face masks, wearing bathrobes and giving each other mutual foot rubs. Take a selfie of you both in your masks and post it on Twitter. You’ll see how envious everyone will be of your private spa nights and how quickly they’ll be to plan their own.
15. Thrift store shopping sprees are never boring.
I have to say, I’ve found most of my favorite clothing from Goodwill. It’s fun, adrenaline-fueled and cheap. Need to go find home decor? Don’t even worry about that one. Half my living room probably costs $200 over the years of collecting antiquities from thrift stores. Find a thrift store near you and go absolutely mad with your man.
