And three-and-a-half years after meeting at a Berlin nightclub, German-born Karl and ginger-haired Dutchman Daan are still going strong.
What’s more, together, they’re achieving one of their mutual dreams: seeing the world.
Now living in their dream home in Amsterdam, the boyfriends are known for their popular gay travel blog karlisworld.com.
‘We have one goal – to make the best of every moment,’ says actor, director and theater maker Daan.
‘We love to explore the hidden paths, following a spontaneous feeling like “I think we should walk this way…” to arrive alone in an abandoned paradise.’
Nature lover and committed vegetarian Daan adds: ‘On every trip – such as the one to Vietnam in 2013, Japan in 2014, and Iceland last year – we fell in love with the moments of discovering nature surprises and bringing that to our fans, readers, and followers.
‘Nowadays, everyone can literally be part of everything. We want to show that love is possible anywhere and that is one of the reasons why we try to capture our magical moments during a trip. It is always us, authentic and real – with maybe a forced smile here and there when we are really tired!’
Describing how they make their personal and professional relationship work, social media manager Karl says: ‘It’s the trust we have in each other.
‘We combine our strengths: from planning a trip to travel photography. We both have a good nose for the right picture moment, and it feels nice that you’re not alone, when you have to improvise when things don’t work out as you planned them’.
The keen volleyball player adds: ‘We want to show gay-friendly spots around the world besides the known gay touristic paths, which are of course fun as well. We think it is very important to stand against homophobia in any form so we hope our little message of love can contribute to the good cause.’’
The boyfriends will soon return to the US for an epic, one-month road trip of the South West Coast.
