UK - The Sun removes article outing gay nurse as former porn star for 'legal' reasons

UK - The Sun was accused of going back to the 'worst tabloid excesses of the 1980s'

The Sun has removed an article outing a gay nurse as a former porn star for ‘legal’ reasons.

In a post yesterday, a 23-year-old recently qualified nurse at a top hospital was publicly outed. The tabloid posted pictures from his alleged 23 films, his Instagram, and sent a photographer to snap shots of him taking out his bins.

How was the article in the public interest?

Many were outraged by the tabloid’s tactics, with many considering it an intrusion of privacy and certainly not in the public interest.

But now, the URL only sends you to a 404 Page Not Found. The URL also now reads ‘legal removal’. It is still cached by Google.

The Sun claimed the adult films were released as the nurse came to the end of his degree in February last year.

They reported how he acted in in the films to get the cash to pay for his education. Nursing degrees start at £9,250 ($11.5k, €10k) a year as well as requiring you to volunteer out of study hours.

The 23-year-old recently got a job in the hematology department.

An anonymous source at the hospital in Leeds told the newspaper: ‘No one at the hospital knew of his background. He’s only just got the job.’

They continue: ‘He’s told bosses it’s behind him and he is no longer a performer.

‘He insists it has no bearing on what he does as a nurse.’

According to The Sun, the nurse denied he was the actor. However, they reported he ‘confessed to hospital bosses’. The hospital itself declined to comment.

Peter Tatchell, veteran gay rights campaigner, told Gay Star News the article reminded him of the ‘worst tabloid excesses of the 1980s’.

‘I would expect the editor to explain the tone and content of the article, and give reason why it could ever possibly be in the public interest,’ he added.
